Takashima City, in Shiga Prefecture, is located in the northwestern part of Lake Biwa. The area releases one-third of the water of Lake Biwa by underground water and thaw water flowing from the Nosaka Mountains and the Hira Mountains. Lake Biwa is an ancient lake formed 4 million years ago. It is the largest freshwater lake in Japan. Approximately 450 rivers flow into Lake Biwa, and the southernmost Seta River (renamed the Uji River) and the Yodo River, are connected to Osaka Bay (Seto Inland Sea). The deepest part of the Lake is located between the mouth of the Ado River in Takashima City and Chikubu Island in Nagahama City (104 meters). 25% of the water stored in Lake Biwa flows From Takashima City, making it a valuable area as a water source forest. Activities include camping, fishing, kayaking, sap and lake bathing.

The cherry blossoms of Kaizu Osaki has been selected as one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan". Around 800 splendid Yoshino cherry trees line 4 kilometers of the shores of Biwa lake, from old cherry trees that are well over 80 years old to young trees that will be passed on to the next generation. In recent years, the best time to see it is around the beginning of April (it varies depending on the climate, etc.), and it is known as a late-blooming cherry blossom spot in the Kinki region. The annual spring festival of Kaizuten Shrine IS held on April 29th every year. Two portable shrines are enshrined, and the priest consecrates them. Carried by young people wearing colorful make-up, the two portable shrines depart from Kaizuten Shrine. Divided into two hands, Kaizu and Nishihama, they talk to each other and sway the portable shrine up, down, left and right, and meander while parading through the Kaizu and Nishihama areas.
